This mission is the foundation for Lee’s emphasis on teaching excellence, a com- mitment to diversity, and access for a wide range of students. Lee seeks to nurture the whole student, and faculty and staff in- volvement with students in and out of the classroom is a priority. Lee has been recognized in the past by the Templeton Foundation for its leadership in the area of preparing students for respon- sible living. As part of this broader mis- sion, Lee takes seriously the task of preparing students for global interdepend- ence, fostering a respect for diversity and encouraging students to serve others. These three aspects of the Lee University mission have taken on an increased signif- icance in recent years. Focus on Global Perspectives As evidence of its commitment to prepar- ing students for global interdependence, Lee University revised its core curriculum in 1998 to include a required seminar course on cross-cultural issues along with participation in an extended, off-campus, cross-cultural experience. As part of its Global Perspectives program, Lee has es- tablished more than 30 cross-cultural study experiences. This program was ranked among the top 20 institutions for bachelor’s level students studying abroad by The Chronicle of Higher Education in 2000, and more recently the Institute of Interna- tional Education ranked Lee #4 among top master’s institutions for the overall percent- age of undergraduate students participat- ing in overseas study programs. Commitment to Diversity While developing the Global Perspectives program, Lee also has reenergized its commitment to racial and ethnic diversity on campus. As a result, the percentage of students who are members of U.S. minor- ity groups has increased from 3.6% in 1997 to 14% in fall 2023. This percentage does not include the nearly 100 interna- tional students at Lee, representing over 44 countries. Emphasis on Service The third area of focus is Lee’s emphasis on service. Stemming from its religious her- itage, the campus culture of Lee University always has valued acts of service to hu- mankind. In fall 2003, Lee launched a serv- ice-learning initiative that introduces students to a variety of service opportunities and prepares them to make a profound and lasting difference in their world. The Leonard Center oversees this comprehen- sive program that is required for all students and includes extensive community service, a course on the biblical and theological foundations of benevolence, and guided stu- dent reflection on the service experiences. Lee offers over 120 degree programs from bachelor’s to doctorate level through its College of Arts & Sciences, Helen DeVos College of Education, School of Business, School of Music, School of Nursing, and School of Theology & Ministry.
