Tennessee Career Guide | 2024-2025 73 MNPD Growth and Opportunities A major benefit of being part of a large po- lice department is opportunity. Patrol the communities of Nashville and be that per- son who responds to a citizen’s call. Help neighborhoods and communities problem solve together as a member of one of our community engagement teams, either precinct-based or county-wide. Have a long lasting positive im-pact on the youth of Nashville as a School Resource Officer. Work with our dogs or horses on either our K-9 or Mounted Units. Become a member of our Crime Scene Unit or Traffic Section where policing and science collide. Help people during natural and major disasters when you become a member of our Urban Search and Rescue team. Take advantage of promotional opportunities and lead other officers and, perhaps, a division or the department one day. There is always time to try something; and, with the many spe- cialized units the MNPD has, there’s always something new to try! See Yourself Here Many kids dream of being a police officer when they grow up, but lose that dream and belief in themselves as they get older. We often hear, “I could never do that job. I just can't see myself succeeding in that pro- fession.” No matter if it's from perceived physical or mental limitations or feeling that you're not the right "type", the MNPD wants to help you fulfill that dream. The MNPD is committed to being a reflection of the community we serve, and that com- munity is YOU! You can absolutely belong here, and we hope you one day will. By be- coming a part of something special with us, you can inspire others to join you and see themselves here as well. In 2021, Chief Drake was one of the first major city chiefs to sign the 30 x 30 Initiative which aims to have 30% female recruit classes by the year 2030. We have also partnered with PERF (Police Executive Research Forum) for their HBCU Summer Internship Program. Di- versity and inclusion are important to the MNPD, and our efforts continue to im- prove in those areas each year. MNPD Structure The MNPD is divided into eight precincts: North, South, East, West, Central, Hermitage, Madison, and Midtown Hills. The department is currently working on a ninth. A precinct is designed similarly to a medium-sized police department, with uniform patrol officers, undercover officers, community engagement officers, plain- clothes detectives, and other specialized units. Because the MNPD is configured in a decentralized format, its precinct comm- anders are given control of their own resources to address issues, combat crime trends, and engage in their respective communities. Each precinct falls under our Community Services Bureau and is supported by Administrative Services, Executive Services, Support Services, and Investigative Services Bureaus, all in an effort to deter, prevent, and respond to criminal trends in the precincts' areas. The department’s overall focus is on three key pillars: Organizational Excellence, Comm- unity Engagement, and Precision Policing. We believe in doing no harm to the community and our employees. The MNPD takes great pride in providing a safe community for its citizens and visitors. Grow with us; become a Nashville Guardian!
