38 2024-2025 | Tennessee Career Guide What is Architecture? What is Architecture? Architecture is a field of study that designs the buildings and other structures around us. Through creative problem solving, architects enrich our lives by designing functional environments that are often at the same time thought provok- ing and beautiful. Architecture incorporates science, math and art. Like art, it is capable of evoking emotions and enriching the hu- man experience. Like science, it involves studying systems that make buildings func- tion such as lighting and ventilation, and like math, it requires analytical thinking and functions. By intertwining the artistic and practical, architecture addresses the challenges of today’s life and is poised to influence the culture of the 21st Century. Tennessee has two accredited architecture programs: 1. University of Tennessee Col- lege of Architecture and Design, and 2. University of Memphis - Department of Architecture. What is A Typical Day Like? Every day in Architecture is different. Typ- ical tasks include construction site visits, client and consultant meetings, as well as time spent working on drawings, coordi- nating with other disciplines, and research- ing codes, materials, and methods. What Kind of Person Is Best Suited? While the variety in architecture allows for all kinds of personalities, creativity, problem solving skills, and self-motivation are good skills to have. Most of the skills needed can be taught, however a strong character, mo- tivation to do one’s best, and ability to work through complications is desired.
