108 2026 | Tennessee Career Guide What is supply chain management? Goods are produced for consumers. But how do those goods become finished prod- ucts and reach where they need to go? Supply chain management masterminds the flow of goods. Raw materials must be stored and cataloged, transformed into us- able inventory, and once finished and given the stamp of approval, must be moved from the point of origin to the point of consumption. The movement of goods is a skillfully designed labyrinth of interlinking networks, channels, and con- necting points, with the customer situated at the end of that supply chain. The man- ager of the supply chain must ensure that the journey from product inception to cus- tomer reception runs without a hitch. Supply chain specialists manage manufac- turing, transportation, warehousing, inven- tory, packaging, and logistics information, dealing with everything from common consumer goods like food, electricity, nat- ural gas, and heating oil for homes to life- saving equipment and supplies. “Supply chain management is integral to almost all manufacturing and service-ori- ented businesses. Supply chains reduce costs, minimize waste, improve productiv- ity, mitigate risks, and provide competitive advantages.
